Greene County Honors Two Outstanding Democrats

It is with pleasure that we share with fellow “Dems” and “Friends of Dems” the recognition of two longtime Democrats, Leon Goodrich and Mike Pirrone.  We join the legislature in congratulating both of them.  Well deserved gentlemen!

Leon Goodrich of Hunter has been proclaimed the “2015 Senior Citizen of the Year” by the Greene County Legislature.   Michael Pirrone of Athens will receive the “2015   Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen” award from the Department of Human Services’ Department for the Aging’s Advisory Council.   County and State ceremonies in May will honor the two men for their commitment and valuable volunteer services to their communities.

Leon Goodrich devoted 64 years to the Hunter Fire Company, serving as president and on many committees.   He was also president of the Greene County Volunteer Fireman’s Association.  Mr. Goodrich has helped with Little League, the Boy Scouts, Greene County Department of Human Services (for the Aging), Homebound Meals Program, and an organization that makes and ships wheelchairs to Africa for survivors of polio and land mines.

Michael Pirrone has worn many hats in his extensive service to community needs:  as volunteer driver for Greene County Home Bound, as board member of Athens Community Foundation, as treasurer of Aging Services Foundation, as instructor for AARP Safe Driver Program, as an active member of his church in Athens and of his tenants association at Sleepy Hollow.  He is president of the Athens Senior Citizens Club.

A special ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 5, in Albany to give state recognition for the achievements of Leon Goodrich and Michael Pirrone.   In its May meeting the Greene County Legislature will recognize both men as well as all of this year’s Greene County nominees for the awards.  The Department of Human Services will give recognition to all the nominees on Friday, May 15, during the 5th annual Senior Citizen Day festivities, to be held at Catskill’s Historic Point, noon to 2 p.m.
