Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit is an enchanting comic farce, which embraces an era when life had a very special style. The time of the 1930s was a period in history that was vastly different from 2010, and has never been forgotten. This smash hit comedy from the London and Broadway stages has been revived numerous times. Playwright Noël Coward also wrote Private Lives. In Blithe Spirit, Coward offers up the fussy, cantankerous novelist, Charles Condomine, who is remarried, but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira. Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy
medium,” one Madame Arcati. As the worldly and un-worldly personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed and “passes over” to join first-wife,
Elvira. The two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
