From New Baltimore Greene County Legislature Candidate Jim Eckl

An open letter, concerning the recent election in which I was the candidate for County Legislator from District 5, the Town of New Baltimore:

What an adventure it was!  An adventure that I could not have pursued without all my supportive friends, an adventure that I would never have even dared to begin without the confidence that I would enjoy your support.  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and I especially thank our Town Co-Chairs, Eilleen Vosburgh and Janet Kash, and our County Chair Doreen Davis.

Because, while this was my candidacy, it was truly our campaign, a campaign to advance the cause of open and responsible governance.

But now the votes have been cast and counted, and my candidacy has been unsuccessful.  So be it: that is the way democracy works.

I was, as the expression goes, in it to win it.  And I will not deny that my loss has been a bitter disappointment.  But despite the disappointing outcome, my loss was not our defeat: we showed our neighbors, and we reassured ourselves, that the Democratic Party and the principles for which it stands are a vibrant component of our community.

And I commend to all of you the words of John Lewis, bloodied hero of the civil rights movement and respected member of the House of Representatives from Georgia, who recently said, “Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
